Today’s letter is E for “Show your evidence!” an important maxim for any type of written work.
Writing a term paper? Well, you’ve got to put forward a thesis and support it with evidence. Drafting a cover letter for a job? You can’t just say “I’m great!” You’ve got to show it with evidence. Plotting a mystery novel? You darn well better have some evidence. “But I’m writing fiction that isn’t a mystery,” you may say. “I’m not proving anything, am I?” Wrong. In fact, that’s the essence of the classic advice “Show; don’t tell.” You’ve got to prove it. Showing your story in scenes means showing the evidence, the sensory details, the instances that demonstrate character, the things that prove your story to the reader and allow them to suspend their disbelief.
